Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements

New requirements

eLearning credit: students are required to earn two online learning credits to graduate from secondary school, beginning with every student who entered Grade 9 in the 2020-2021 school year. Adult learners entering the Ontario secondary school system in 2023-2024 or later will be required to meet this graduation requirement and may opt themselves out of the requirement. The graduation requirement is intended to support students in developing familiarity and comfort with working and learning in a fully online environment, as well as developing digital literacy and other important transferable skills that will help prepare them for success after graduation and in all aspects of their lives.

To opt-out of eLearning, complete the FFSS Opt-out of e-learning graduation requirement form.

Grade 9 and 10 technological education credit: beginning with students entering Grade 9 in September 2024, all students will now be required to earn a Grade 9 or 10 technological education credit as part of their OSSD. This new learning graduation requirement will expose Ontario’s students to at least one technological education course.

Honour roll

Honour roll is calculated using the final grades earned for courses during the regular school year.

Grade 9: 80 percent average or higher of eight courses.

Grade 10: 80 percent average or higher of eight courses.

Grade 11: 80 percent average or higher of (top) seven courses.

Grade 12: 80 percent average or higher of (top) six courses, taken in your graduating year.

Ontario Scholar: 80 percent average or higher of six Grade 12 courses. Courses do not need to be taken all in your graduating year.
