Mental Health Services Newsletter – April

This newsletter is a new initiative from the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Mental Health Services Department. We will be sending one newsletter focussed on mental health each month until the end of the school year. It is our hope that you find the content in this newsletter informative and helpful.

Schools are ideal places for mental health promotion, the prevention of mental health problems, and the early identification of mental health concerns.

What is mental health?

Mental health is how we think, feel, and act. It is a desired state of well-being that allows us to reach our goals, feel good about ourselves, and cope with life’s ups and downs. Just like our physical health, our mental health changes – we all have times when we don’t feel mentally well.

It is important for all of us to take care of our mental health everyday so that, during times of stress, uncertainty, challenge, and life changes (even positive changes), we have the skills and tools needed to help us cope and stay mentally healthy.

When should I reach out for additional help for my child(ren)?

You know your child(ren) best. You have an important role in noticing when your child is experiencing distress that can result in changes in their thoughts, their feelings, or the way they behave.

Parents and caring adults may notice changes in behaviours and emotions that could be potential signs of a mental health problem. Ask yourself:

  • Are these behaviours and emotions out of character for my child?
  • Are they having a negative impact on my child’s ability to enjoy everyday life?
  • Are they having a negative impact on our family life?
  • Are they getting in the way of my child’s progress at school?
  • Are these concerning behaviours happening more often?
  • Are they more intense?
  • Are they lasting longer?

Where do I go for help for my child(ren)?

There are many caring professionals who can assist. Start with your child’s teacher and/or your child’s doctor.

In TLDSB schools, there are mental health counsellors who help support students. If you want more information about this, reach out to your child’s teacher or school principal to request a consultation.

Community resources are available. Find help in your community through the Children’s Mental Health Ontario website.

What can I do to promote positive mental health?

  • Promote healthy habits: regular sleep routines, healthy eating habits, and regular physical activity.
  • Keep communication and conversation flowing by asking questions and listening to your child. Mealtimes are a great time for talking and connecting with your child.
  • Encourage children to play. Children who play regularly with their parents/guardians are less likely to develop anxiety, depression, aggression, and sleep problems.
  • Promote healthy coping skills to deal with stress and anxiety. See this School Mental Health Ontario page for activities to practice.
  • Limit screen time – yours and theirs!
