Dear Parent/Guardian:

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your son/daughter back to another exciting year at Fenelon Falls Secondary School.

One of our school improvement pillars is to create and maintain a positive school climate. We will be promoting a philosophy of Feed All Four this year. Supporting the mind, body, spirit, and emotions of an individual increases a sense of well-being, connectedness and resilience, and improves student achievement.

On the first day of school, a student information form will be sent home. Please make sure the form is returned with accurate information to update our School Connects system and to allow our staff to share information with you via text, email or phone.  Teachers will be communicating with you regularly, with the first mark update being sent home the week of October 17th.  We post all important events and information on our website at ffs.tldsb.on.ca. The school’s twitter feed @FenelonFallsSS gives great insights into events and student life and can also be seen on our website, so please follow us!

We would like to welcome several new and returning staff members. Elizabeth Alton will be joining us as a vice-principal from LCVI. Roger Thompson will also be coming back to us from LCVI to join our technology department for the first semester. Ali Lockhart will be joining our Math Department, Hilary Harpell will be returning to teach special education, hospitality and tourism, and food and nutrition, and Angela Graham will be rejoining our PHE department. Diane Kelly will be returning to our English department and Nicole Judson will be joining us as an educational assistant. Our school nurse Kylie Pankhurst will not be returning to the school this year.

We have a student attending our school with a LIFE THREATENING AIRBORNE PEANUT ALLERGY. This means that even indirect airborne contact with peanut allergens can cause a fatal reaction. PLEASE DO NOT BRING PEANUT OR PEANUT PRODUCTS into the school environment.

We have made the following changes to our facility:

-our running track and pits have been refurbished

-new student washrooms have been installed on the second floor of Green Street

-we will have a second room devoted to student success, located in room 243. A pilot study last year showed that over 66% of the students accessed this room during the second semester.

-new treadmills and elliptical trainers will be installed in the fitness room and new bikes have been purchased for the outdoor education classes, which can be shared as needed.

We will be hosting an Ontario Early Years Centre in our school starting this year. The community use group will be using room 133 during the school day. If you need to contact the organization, please call their Lindsay head office at 705-324-7900 or oeyc.ca.

We have made changes to our timetable tumble this year. The morning periods 1 and 2 will remain constant regardless of the day all semester. Only the afternoon classes will change, depending of odd or even days. On a day A, the periods will flow 1,2,3,4, and on a day B classes will flow 1,2,4,3. This will allow easier access to part time supply teachers and will help with aligning dual credit college programs and coop placements.

We will be hosting our first Parent Council meeting on September 20th at 7 pm in the library. All parents are welcome to join our Parent Council. The schedule for upcoming meetings can be found on the calendar on our website once the dates have been set.

If your son or daughter has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), the plan will be updated within the first six weeks of the semester. If you have any concerns or questions about the revisions to the IEP or would like to meet to discuss the IEP, please contact our Head of Specialized Services Sherry Telford at sherry.telford@tldsb.on.ca, or at 705-887-2018 extension 32031.

This is a very exciting time of year for all of us.  If you have any concerns or suggestions regarding your child’s education here at Fenelon Falls Secondary School, please give me a call.

Sincerely,

Ray Este
